Rock lobster available most of the year!

If rock lobster is your fare, you will be happy to know that this crustacean is available most of the year in the Land Down Under. The caveat is that the best live specimens among these crawfish will leave a hole in your pocket of at least A$80 (U$51.5) per kg. This goes for frozen lobster, as live lobster averages A$76.50 per 900 grams.

It may seem a bit expensive at above US$50 a kilo but it is official that the seafood had its heyday in 2018 when Australia exported US$750 million. Then, it was not hard to land a plate with a lobster costing above A$80 a kg. Because of the lucrative import price of A$100 a kilo of this crustacean to China in 2018, most harvests went into exports, making home remainders expensive. In 2020, the retail prices fell to their lowest amid the pandemic only to pick up in 2022 to date.

Popular lobster in Australia

If you were to choose the best rock lobster in Australia, here are the four top marine species:

1. Western Rock Lobster

Current price: A$80 to A$129.9 (US$51.18-83.11) per kg

Scientifically known as Panulirus cygnus, this is an ocean and farmed species that thrives on the marine coasts of western Australia. It is colourful, vivacious and a creature of temperate waters. As one of the most fished rock lobsters in Australia, there is a limit for only catching those under 3 kg, though the species matures to 5 kg total weight. The fishing season for these spiny lobsters occurs after winter spawning over.

2. Tropical Rock Lobster

Current price: starts from A$81 (US$51.83) per kg

Though not as glossy-looking as the western rock lobster, the Panulirus ornatus species boasts the widest distribution in Australian waters. The crawfish inhabit muddy seas and shallow waters that are less than 50 metres deep. They are relatively large at more than 1.5 kg when mature. Thanks to their amazing texture and great taste, they come as some of the more expensive lobsters for their size.

3. Eastern Rock Lobster

Current price: A$87.5 (US$55.97) and above

Huge and monstruous, the Eastern rock lobster (Sagmariasus verreauxi) have a widespread habitat that stretches from New South Wales-Queensland marine shores to Tasmania. They inhabit plankton seas where they can hide in the weed. They are large, with each specimen weighing 8 kg. They reach 26 cm long or 1 metre when including their antennae and carapace.

4. Southern Rock Lobster

Current price: From A$88.99 (US$56.94) to A$139.99 (US$89.57) per kg

Also known as Tasmanian southern rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii measure 23 cm including their peripheries such as carapace. They are ornate-looking, with a scarlet-purplish tint that can brighten to orange and yellow depending on habitat. The species thrives on molluscs and other crustaceans.
